PRACTICALITIES & PRICES

TRAVEL Make sure you reserve your travel to Bali well-ahead, as flights are often booked up long in advance and hard to get at the last minute, particularly during holiday periods.

PASSPORTS PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR PASSPORT IS VALID FOR 6 MONTHS FROM THE DATE OF ENTRY INTO INDONESIA, OR YOU WILL BE REFUSED ENTRY!

  HOW TO GET HERE

We can arrange to meet your plane and bring you here for €30.

If you prefer to make your own arrangements, explain to the driver that you need to go to Sidemen.  Allow for about two hours travel from the airport - much of this is through beautiful rice paddy areas as well as past numerous craft shops.

Sidemen is about10 km north of the village of Paksebali-Ksatria, after the town of Klungkung (Semarapura). From Klunkung, take the PadangBai/Amlapura highway, and cross the big bridge over the river.

At Paksebali-Ksetria, one kilometre from the centre of Klungkung, there are shops selling offerings and temple umbrellas. Where the road bends sharply to the right, there is a cross-roads. Turn left here. You will now be heading north, towards the mountains. Follow signs for Subak Tabola Inn (which is just past Nirarta).

When you reach the village of Sidemen, you will see the Pelangi weaving shop on your left. About 150 metres after this, you will find a turning to the left. This turning is just before the Sidemen market (pasar) and police station (kantor polisi). Take this turning. You are now about 1.5km from Nirarta. When the road forks, you will see a sign for Nirarta. Take the left fork, for Tabola. Go past the Pura Puseh temple. Go past the last village school (Sekolah Dasar VIII) and find Nirarta about 300 metres further on the right.

If in doubt ask locals for Peter's house (Rumah Petterrr!). For a travel map with directions, click here.

  TELECOMMUNICATIONS

The phone line to Nirarta is often out of order, which may be the case if no one appears to answer your call. Outside calls can normally only be made by guests using their personal telephone charge cards or at the telephone centre in the village.

Faxes can be received at +62 366 21444, the local telecommunications office in Klungkung. Please use this service for emergencies, as the office is 30 minutes drive from Sidemen in Klungkung. Please mark: attention Peter Wrycza, Nirarta, tel. 24122. Faxes would normally be collected within 48 hours.

MONEY You may find it helpful to change some money at the airport, although the rate is generally somewhat inferior to that available in Ubud or Sanur. Most widely used currencies can be changed, but US dollars are still the preferred foreign currency. Bring $100 US bills as the rate is inferior for smaller bills. Newer (post-2001) bills are better as some years are rarely accepted (esp. 1996). Travellers cheques can also be cashed in Ubud and elsewhere, but can involve a half-hour trip to cash locally to Nirarta.

  CLOTHING

Generally, you will need light summer clothing. You may wish to travel light and buy a few things in Bali, which has a small textile industry. The range available in Sidemen, however, is limited, compared with the tourist centres of Ubud, Sanur, Kuta, or even the small market town of Klungkung.

If you wish to hike, you may like to bring some strong walking shoes. But these are not absolutely necessary. It is possible to walk about quite easily in sandals or even plastic flip-flops, which can be more convenient for negotiating wet rice paddies and irrigation streams.

If you are participating in a retreat at Nirarta some loose and light clothing for movement and meditation will be useful.

  SOME THINGS TO BRING

You will find the following items useful:

  • a small pocket torch (flashlight) (frequent power cuts!)
  • swimming costume (bathers)
  • a spare towel if you wish to bathe in the river, a nearby swimming pool, or the sea
  • an umbrella and light rain-proof anorak or fold-away macintosh
  • a sunhat
  • sun-cream (available in Bali, but not easily found in Sidemen)
  • camera and film
  • open sandals or flip-flops (as shoes often need slipping off, as they are not worn indoors
  • sun hat
  • 3-4 pairs of shorts
  • sleeveless or short sleeved T-shirts
  • a couple of light blouses (ladies) for temple ceremonies
  •

FOOD AT NIRARTA Food at Nirarta is semi-vegetarian (tofu and tempe are used; fish, chicken may be served). Very little dairy produce (milk, cheese, etc.) is used. The food is generally served with rice and spiced mildly to suit the Western palate. If you have particular dietary needs, please let us know. Many of the vegetables are fresh from Nirarta's Organic Garden.

  HEALTH, INSECTS, ETC.

Malaria is not endemic in Bali (unlike Lombok). There are very few mosquitoes at Nirarta, but you may find some roll-on insect repellent useful for visits to other places, or if you tend to attract bugs!

Unless you are travelling to other parts of Indonesia vaccinations are not really necessary for Bali, particularly if you are reasonably careful with what you eat and drink when out and about. If in doubt consult your doctor.

If you require further information, please ask us. We speak English, French, Italian, Indonesian, and some German and Spanish.
